The trend continues! iOS and Android both continue to dominate each quarterly total shipments year after year. This quarter Apple has made the jump almost accounting for a fourth of total shipments! Its amazing to see their growth against companies that sell various different phones while Apple sells a lone three (3GS/4/4s).
Some data release Thursday by IDC once again shows the first quarter of 2012s top selling smartphone operating systems. Its no surprise that iOS and Android made two slot appearances, but their length in lead is simply stunning. Android sold a stunning 89.9 million smartphones in Q1 of 2012, while Apple sold 35.1 million iOS smartphones. Certainly the two are no-where close, separated by over 50 million sales, however the differences come with the quantity of devices on the market. Android has hundreds of phones for sale while iOS has three in production.
Both companies also saw great upwards trends for Q1 of 2011 to 2012. iOS nearly doubled their sales from 18.6 million to 35.1 million. Android on the other hand well over double their sales from 36.7 million to 89.9 million. This gives you an idea of how fast the smartphone population is growing.
The chart above lists all major smartphone operating systems, and clearly there is no competition. Android smartphones populate 59 percent of sales while iOS populates 23 percent. The other closest O.S is Symbian, ranking only 6.8 percent of sales.
